David Sweet Watch

The ludicrous charade draws to an end (hopefully). David Sweet Watch is launched/revitalized. For those who don't know, Sweet is the Conservative MP for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale. He is a leader of the hard-line religious right. He is on a singular mission. He represents only those of whom he approves and this leaves a number of Canadian groups here in West Hamilton entirely in the cold. Where I come from this rules one out as a candidate for public office. However, through careful political silence he stole a riding which he shouldn't have had a hope at.

It is lovely to see concerned Hamiltonians taking matters into their own hands. It looks like there has been a lot of worthwhile effort on this. I plan on visiting the site early and often. I recommend the same. Marvel at what didn't make the news last election.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Elsewhere, Justin Trudeau announces that he will pursue the Liberal candidacy in Papineau. This is a legitimately steep challenge, and a great entry point. Pity - so many smarmy rank-and-filers were really looking forward to bellyaching about "the path of least resistance", not paying dues, etc.

Don't know this MP, but, upon what, are you substantiating the above claim?

And what would be his singular mission?

Why all the secracy in his bio? I mean isn't he proud of his work with these organizations? Therefore, he must have some secret motivations to hide this info from the public, like an hidden agenda, which is so harperist of him. I now put together who this guy is, and his association with the promise keepers. I'm just so surprised he got elected in this area.

Why not come right out and say what *you* think he is up to?

Anon - I'm not sitting on some wild allegation, like that he is preparing Hamilton for an alien invasion. But it's not dificult to connect the dots - from publicly musing shortly before entering politics about how politics and 'morality' (in the pious sense) can't be separated, to explicitly anti-gay slurs, etc. etc. He has committed his professional life to advancing a particular gospel reading. There is no reason to believe this has changed. This is not the job of an MP.

Welcome Justin! Sorry he hasn't networked at the hottest Liberal bake-socials. Somehow, I'm thinking he'll do fine nonetheless.

I wouldn't say that Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale is a riding that isn't winneable for the Tories. I find his views repulsive, the problem is the riding, I believe does include a fair amount of rural territory where those kind of views are more common. I believe Flamborough is quite conservative, Ancaster is a swing area, while Dundas is Liberal, and Westdale is NDP. The reality is this is an odd riding since it combines urban, suburban, and rural so no matter who wins, it will anger people.

Still I would love to see people like him defeated no matter what riding they are in. We don't need extremists like that in politics period.
